Every year EngineerGirl hosts a writing contest to encourage students, grades 3-12, to investigate engineering and the ways that it shapes our world. Our hope is that the competition can spark discussion and activities that can enhance or extend the material you are already teaching.Every year, the EngineerGirl website sponsors a contest dealing with engineering and its impact on our world. The ExploraVision competition for K-12 students engages the next generation in real world problem solving with a strong emphasis on STEM. ExploraVision challenges students envision and communicate new technology 20 years in the future through collaborative brainstorming and research of current science and technology.
ExploraVision is a science competition that goes beyond the typical student science competition and into what it takes to bring ideas to reality. A teacher will sponsor and lead his/her students as they work in groups of 2-4 to simulate real research and development. A teacher will guide his or her students as they pick a current technology, research it, envision what it might look like in 20 years, and describe the development steps, pros & cons, and obstacles. Past winners have envisioned technologies ranging from a hand-held food allergen detector to a new device to help people who have lost limbs regain movement in real time.
eCYBERMISSION is a web-based Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics competition for 6th, 7th, 8th and 9th grade teams. Your team will propose a solution to a real problem in your community and compete for State, Regional and National Awards. eCYBERMISSION challenges you to explore how Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics work in your world.
Renewable energy is an important topic that cuts across academic disciplines. The University offers two programs in renewable energy, open to students in all fields, that are designed to complement their chosen field of study by exposing them to crucial technical, economic and social issues relevant to renewable energy.?
The Summer Research EXperience is a six-week long research program offered for High School and Community College students. We aim to provide an introductory STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) research experience to students who have no formal research training beyond high school courses. The program lasts from June 26 to August 4. Students must be 18 years or older and they receive a stipend of $1200.
School-based agricultural education (SBAE) is an essential educational program delivered through career and technical education in Nevada for students desiring to learn about the science, business, and technology of plant and animal production and/or about the environmental and natural resources systems. Consists of three principle components: contextual, inquiry-based instruction; premiere leadership, personal growth and career success through engagement in FFA; and experiential, service and/or work-based learning through supervised agricultural experience programs.
The Student Interactions with STEM (SISTEM) program is a series of talks and hands-on interactions that gives high school students the opportunity to learn about various STEM careers and research. The program is free for students and open to all high school students. High school students who are not within driving distance of UNLV may attend the program remotely.
M.A.S.A is a rigorous applied science program that instructs students about plants, food production, floral design, greenhouse management, animals, natural resources, nutrition and much more. Throughout the program students are also taught a wide variety of employable skills, including but not limited to verbal and written communications skills, leadership skills, and management/technology skills for future internships and possible employment.
Agricultural Science Education uses a three-circle model of instruction. These models are classroom and laboratory instruction, and experiential learning. The successful integration of each of these three components with the handson teaching model results in a strong program that produces well rounded individuals who are prepared to be leaders in agriculture, business, and all professional industries.
Welcome to Southern Nevada’s only public planetarium, where the stars are literally the stars of the show. Our 68-seat theater features an Evans & Sutherland Digistar 5 high definition hemispheric video projection system that creates virtual realities on an impressive dome surrounding the audience.
We present different events and shows to the general public on weekends and to local schools on weekday mornings. In addition, the Las Vegas Astronomical Society calls our planetarium home, and the CSN college astronomy professors use the facilities during introductory astronomy courses.
